EFSA guidelines on animal testing

Guidelines stress the importance of good communication between agencies.

The European Food Safety Authority's scientific committee has published reviews about the use of experimental animals in various risk assessment activities of the EFSA and outlines ways to reduce such studies.

The opinion urges animal testing to be carried out according to EU-endorsed principles or those suggested by other international bodies such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. It also recommends a dialogue between EFSA and the European Commission on the best ways to address the inclusion of new, validated testing methods in existing guidelines based on the replacement, reduction and refinement of animal testing.

It also stresses the importance of good communication between the different agencies dealing with chemical risk assessment.
