Reeling from the triple shocks of high feed prices, a strong Canadian dollar and the H1N1 challenges, Canadian pork producers say they will not survive unless they get federal support of at least CAN$800 million, the Canadian Press reported.
Pork producers in Canada are reportedly losing CAN$40 to CAN$50 a pig.
Canada's pork industry generates more than $7 billion for economy and has a workforce of 42,000 on the export side alone. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture has labeled the crisis an "extraordinary situation" and said disaster would strike if help from the federal government did not come soon.
