Corn farmers in the Philippines have requested biotechnology company Monsanto to develop and distribute a genetically modified tropical variety, weed-tolerant soybean as an alternative crop, BusinessWorld Online reported.
Approximately 1.5-2.5 million metric tons of soybean meal are imported yearly by feed millers, and soybean accounts for 20% of animal feed milling ingredients.
The Philippine Maize Federation Inc., also known as Philmaize, expects to sign a deal with Monsanto later this year.
