Hendrix Genetics receives funding

A grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will help support African poultry farmers.

Hendrix Genetics proudly announces its reception of a multi-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aimed at uplifting small-scale African poultry farmers. This significant investment underscores a commitment to rural development and community empowerment across the African continent.

The grant will facilitate the development and distribution of poultry breeds tailored specifically for African conditions. With a focus on affordability and quality, Hendrix Genetics aims to ensure that small-scale farmers have access to high-quality genetics. The company will collaborate closely with stakeholders throughout the poultry value chain to optimize delivery mechanisms and support systems for farmers.

Investment in Africa for Africa

This initiative marks a pivotal step towards transforming the poultry value chain in Africa. By leveraging partnerships and investing in genetic improvement, Hendrix Genetics aims to breed chickens better suited to local conditions, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability. The program will also explore the establishment of a grandparent facility in Africa to ensure continuous access to parent stock.

SASSO, the traditional poultry brand under Hendrix Genetics, has been integral to this endeavor, supplying parent stock to African partners and reaching millions of smallholder farmers. Expansion of market reach and genetic performance promises to amplify the positive impact on African communities.

"Investment in Recurrent Testing is an important step to develop the poultry value chain in Africa for Africa," remarks Louis Perrault, senior advisor for SASSO, emphasizing the importance of data-driven insights and tailored support for the region.

Empowering a Sustainable Supply Chain

Central to the program's success is the development of a sustainable link between all components of the value chain. Through targeted interventions and support for local farms, Hendrix Genetics aims to enhance the affordability and quality of poultry for small-scale farmers. Genetic improvement efforts will further bolster productivity and resilience, contributing to food security and income generation.

Dr. Naomi Duijvesteijn, program manager at Hendrix Genetics, will oversee the project, ensuring alignment with the ambitious targets set by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
