Avian influenza hits commercial gamebirds in Alabama

Alabama’s first case of avian flu in a commercial flock was confirmed on October 27, 2023.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in a commercial upland gamebird operation on October 27, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

The affected flock involved 296,500 birds and was located in Chilton County.

According to information from APHIS, no commercial poultry flocks have yet been affected in Alabama during the 2022-23 HPAI outbreak, and this is the state’s first commercial flock of any type which HPAI was confirmed. The only other confirmed detection in the state was a non-commercial, non-poultry flock was reported in December 2022.

With the new Alabama case, the following states have had confirmed HPAI cases in commercial poultry or commercial gamebirds: Alabama, Minnesota, California, Iowa, South Dakota, Utah, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, Virginia and Tennessee.

In Canada, HPAI has struck commercial poultry in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec in 2023.
