The European Commission has approved Biorigin's Selemax, an organic selenium product, as a nutritional additive for all animal species, with no limitations of age or period of administration. Biorigin is a Brazil-based feed ingredient supplier.

Selemax is a selenium source in the form of organic compounds produced from a Saccharomyces cerevisiae-type yeast enriched with selenium. It is presented at the concentrations of 1,000 and 2,000 parts per million.

The process for the approval of Biorigin's organic selenium for the European market started in 2007, when the data for the registration file was compiled by a multidisciplinary group from Biorigin, which was composed by employees and an external consultant.

Technical trials were carried out for three years to demonstrate product functions, and to determine product specifications, technical data and other relevant information. The file for Selemax registration was submitted to the European Food Safety Authority in 2010, and their positive scientific opinion was published in 2012.

According to Maria Angélica Ebert Tímaco, from Biorigin's regulation affairs department, "The registration of Selemax in Europe meant a significant challenge for Biorigin, specifically for our department, as it was the first product we registered in Europe. It took us a considerable effort, but now we are very happy with the result and believe that the approval will allow a stronger presence of Biorigin in the European market."

The approval obtained by Biorigin allows the product to be sold in the European market.

Roberto Vituzzo, Animal Nutrition Business Manager for Biorigin, said, "In addition of being an excellent product from the nutritional standpoint, Selemax is one further step of Biorigin inside a very demanding market. With this approval, we will increase our share in the European market and consolidate our position by the quality and high technology of our products. We are sure that Selemax will have the same sales and performance success it has conquered in other markets, such as the United States, Asia, and Latin America. We have made huge investments in technology to develop this product, and the result is the positive influence of Selemax on livestock performance."
