Agency retracts ministry message

Official states Egypt has not banned import of genetically modified crop.

Egypt's state news agency MENA has denied an earlier report stating that the agriculture minister has banned the import of genetically modified crops, according to the Reuters.

A ministry official reportedly said that Amin Abaza never ordered that a certificate accompany imports to show they are free of genetically modified materials.

The debate over food quality was intensified in Egypt after imports of Russian wheat were rejected over quality concerns. Members of parliament have been calling for stricter rules and greater agricultural self-sufficiency.
