Changes in the regulation of antibiotics are affecting pork production around the world, especially for integrated food companies and countries that export pork, says Dr. Y.K. Kwan, a veterinarian with feed industry experience who provides technical services for Diamond V partners and customers in Southeast Asia.

“Two common challenges for pigs are biosecurity failures and poor hygiene and farm practices. We typically see outbreaks in areas with poor disease control measures in place.”

Diamond V’s Kevin Corizzo interviewed Dr. Kwan at the 2018 World Pork Expo in Des Moines, IA as part of the company’s monthly video series Diamond V at 75: Immune Strength for Life. The series celebrates Diamond V’s history in the animal and feed industries and highlights the company's diverse expertise and vision for the future.

Dr. Kwan also explained how heat stress can be detrimental to the pig’s intestinal microbial ecosystem, causing a health challenge that can lead to pathogen transmission into the body.

“Higher colonization of food pathogens such as SalmonellaCampylobacter, and E. coli and the resulting dissemination into the food chain definitely increases food safety risks,” she added.

The Diamond V at 75 video series will continue throughout 2018 and highlight Diamond V initiatives and industry expertise.
