Drought hurts people, crops in China

Rain down 13% in Guangdong province

Due to the drought spread, more than 50,000 people in Guangdong province suffer from lack of drinking water, while 53,333 hectares of crops are affected, according to a report from Beijing’s state-owned Xinhua News Agency.

Average rainfall in Guangdong this year declined by 13% compared with previous years to 1,400 millimeters. In the worst-hit areas, cracks already appear in the field.

The Guangdong government has provided more than US$10 million (67.7 million yuan) for drought relief, said the report.
