Canadian coalition voices concern for pork industry

Group contacts government about risk management, industry health

According to Pork News, a joint letter on behalf of the Ontario Agriculture Sustainability Coalition (OASC) recently was sent to Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Leona Dombrowsky.

This letter outlined issues the Ontario agriculture industry is dealing with, and what it adds to the Ontario economy. It also endorsed the government's work with the grains and oilseeds sector in creating a risk management program. The coalition is looking for the same kind of leadership, to ensure fairness within the industry.

In November, OASC met with Minister Dombrowsky, and discussions included the importance of agriculture and food within Ontario, such as economic drivers and local food supply.

It was pointed out that Ontario pork creates 33,000 jobs and accounts for $4.7 billion in economic activity for the province.
