Snowy weather in Denmark for the 2010 Agromek show provided an opportunity for Danish insurance company Topdanmark to promote a service that will clear snow from the roofs of customers’ pig buildings.
The idea started with severe snowstorms during the 2009/10 winter period, when house roofs on 150 pig units in the northern Jutland area of Denmark collapsed under the weight of snow.
Today, producers covered by Topdanmark’s new insurance plan can call the company if the build-up of snow on the roof of any of their pig-houses becomes excessive. It will then arrange for a contractor to visit without extra charge and remove the snow before there is any structural collapse.
