Rodney Ray, a graduate student from the University of Tennessee, was named the winner of the 2011 FoodFight “Can You Take the Heat” Wing Contest, held at the International Poultry Expo and International Feed Expo and sponsored by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, Georgia World Congress Center and Levy Restaurants.
Approximately 30 participants sampled some of Atlanta’s hottest wings soaked in ghost pepper, cayenne, jalapeno and other hot sauces. Each participant was required to sign a waiver, in addition to wearing gloves and protective eyewear. In a stand-off with another competitor, Ray ate seven hot wings in 30 seconds, winning the grand prize: an Apple iPad. The remaining participants received a 2011 FoodFight souvenir t-shirt.
