WTO ruling favoring US poultry draws senators' applause

From WATTAgNet:
The World Trade Organization’s (WTO) ruling against India on its ban on U.S. poultry imports has drawn the attention of U.S. senators from key poultry producing states, who say the ruling will greatly help the poultry industry not only in the states they represent, but also in the U.S. as a whole.
“This is a great victory for the United States and Georgia poultry, in particular,” Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia, ranking member on the Senate Finance Subcommittee on International Trade, said in a statement. “I have been working to open up India to U.S. poultry since this issue was brought to my attention. Georgia is the fourth largest poultry-producing region in the world, so this means a great deal to our state economy.”
Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Maryland, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Environment and Public Works Committee, said enabling U.S. poultry producers have complete access to the global food market is "incredibly important" to sustaining the poultry industry.
"The latest ruling from the WTO strikes down an unfounded ban on U.S. poultry an important step in ensuring a level playing field for domestic agriculture," he said.
The WTO ruling, announced on October 14, states that India was wrong to place a ban on U.S. poultry products, which had been in place since 2007. The ban was implemented as a means of preventing low pathogenic avian influenza. However, the WTO noted that India provided no scientific evidence to support the validity of the ban.
