An employee at the Sanderson Farms poultry further processing plant in Flowood, Mississippi, was arrested on July 2 following an altercation that left another employee with life-threatening injuries.

According to a Facebook post from the Flowood Police Department (FPD), Lawrence Charles Gibson, a resident of Brandon, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault. He and a co-worker, whose identity has not yet been released, got into “a knifing altercation.”

“Prior to our arrival, the Sanderson Farms management team and security staff had already separated the two employees and they were able to surrender Gibson into police custody,” the Facebook post read.

Gibson was booked into the Rankin County jail under a $1 million bond.

“The Flowood Police Department would like to thank Sanderson Farms for their quick response in securing Gibson and getting their injured employee the much-needed medical help. We would also like to ask everyone to join us in praying for the victim and his family as he continues to fight for his life,” the FPD stated.

No updates on the other person’s medical condition have been released since the message was posted on Facebook on July 2.

The Flowood plant in 2017 underwent a $4.2 million expansion, with the addition of a fry line. The facility was also a recipient of a U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY) Clean Water Award in 2012 and an Award of Honor from the Joint Industry Safety & Health Council in 2014..
