The State of Alabama has awarded a $250,000 grant to the City of Crossville, so it can make improvements to its sewer system to handle added demands brought on by the expansion of the Koch Foods poultry plant in the city.

According to a report from WDEF, Koch Foods wants to triple the size of the Crossville plant.

The grant was announced by Gov. Kay Ivey. “Poultry is a $15 billion industry in Alabama, and DeKalb County is a significant factor in that high number,” she said. “The expansion of the Koch Foods plant will further improve the economy in northeast Alabama and provide important job opportunities for 35 residents.”

Crossville is located in DeKalb County.

Koch Foods hatchery expansion

It was reported in October that Koch Foods has started construction work to expand its hatchery, also in Crossville.

The hatchery currently has a weekly processing capacity of 14 million broilers, but the expansion will increase its capacity to set another 2.1 million eggs per week. The hatchery will use equipment from Pas Reform.

Also included in the hatchery expansion project is a complete HVAC system.

Koch Foods, which is headquartered in Chicago, is the fifth largest broiler company in the United States. The company, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, produced 50 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2016.

The company’s brands include Koch Poultry, Antioch Farms, Cravers, Rogers Royal, Mr. Bennies and numerous private labels.
