A contractor doing work at a Butterball facility in Mount Olive, North Carolina, died as a result of a workplace accident.

The company issued the following statement concerning the incident: “On Thursday, February 22, 2024, an external contractor’s employee working on a project at Butterball’s Mount Olive, NC, facility passed away from injuries sustained during a tragic incident. We are deeply saddened, and we extend our sincere condolences to their family and friends. We will continue to coordinate closely with the relevant authorities as the investigation remains ongoing.”

The name of the deceased has not yet been released.

According to a News 12 report, the North Carolina Department of Labor is investigating the incident.

Butterball and Darling Ingredients announced in June 2023 that the two companies had reached an agreement to develop a rendering facility on land adjacent to the Butterball plant in Mount Olive, and that if the project gained all of the necessary permits and the definitive agreements were executed, construction could begin in early 2024. However, a spokesperson for Butterball said the project in which the deceased worker was involved was not related to the future rendering plant.
