New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continue to be confirmed in North America, with recent detections in both the United States and Canada.
South Dakota has another HPAI case
On December 1, the presence of HPAI was confirmed in a commercial meat turkey flock in Lake County, South Dakota, according to information from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). There were 78,000 turkeys in the flock.
This is Lake County’s second case of 2022, with the first of those being confirmed on April 2. That flock involved 59,000 commercial meat turkeys.
This is South Dakota’s 55th case of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock in 2022. Only Minnesota has had more confirmed cases with 79.
British Columbia HPAI cases continue
Seven new cases of HPAI have been confirmed in commercial poultry in Abbotsford, British Columbia. From December 2 through December 4, two new cases were confirmed each day, and one was confirmed on December 5, reported the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
Information concerning the types of birds in these flocks, or how many birds were involved has not yet been disclosed.
British Columbia has had more HPAI cases in 2022 than any other province in Canada. These six new detections bring the province’s case count to 45. Of those, 28 were confirmed in Abbotsford. Other locations in British Columbia to have confirmed cases include Chilliwack (12), Langley Township (3), North Okahagan (1) and the District of Kent (1).
