Cage-free egg production in Indonesia has taken another step forward following the signing of an agreement between Singapore-based consulting company Global Food Partners (GFP) and Indonesian egg producer PT Widodo Makmur Unggas Tbk (WMU).

The partnership, finalized at the Indo Livestock conference in Surabaya, Indonesia, aims to advance updated cage-free production practices in Indonesia and increase the number of cage-free eggs available to consumers in the county.

Through the partnership, GFP plans to provide technical training to WMU staff to help them implement updated management practices on their cage-free farms. Additionally, GFP plans to assist WMU in gaining third-party animal welfare certifications and facilitate market connections between the producer and businesses with cage-free commitments in the country.

“At this point in time, we are focusing on cage-free systems and working with Global Food Partners, which has been focusing on the cage-free industry for a longer time than us,” stated Tri Mahawijaya Herlambang, WMU Head of Marketing. “We chose to collaborate with Global Food Partners because we hope to add more value to eggs, especially for consumers who are concerned about animal welfare.”

Kristina Yolanda of GFP in Indonesia stated,:  “Many of our corporate clients and partners are looking to increase sourcing of cage-free eggs in Indonesia and across Asia, ahead of their 2025 cage-free commitment deadlines. We’re happy to work together with egg producers like WMU and other industry leaders to help them achieve best practices on farm, and with food and hospitality buyers to ensure they meet their commitments.”

GFP’s sponsorship program

The same week that GFP announced its partnership with WMU, it also launched its Impact Scholarship Program, which allows food businesses and others to sponsor farmer access to training in cage-free production practices.

The program offers three levels of sponsorship:

1.      An e-course for egg producers to obtain certification

2.      Hands-on training for egg producers at GFP’s Cage-free Innovation and Welfare Hub in Indonesia

3.      One-on-one support and training at the producer’s farm
