The California Senate voted 20-15 to defeat a bill proposing the limited use of antibiotics to prevent and control disease in animal agriculture, according to a report from the Western United Dairymen.
The bill, SB 416 by Sen. Dean Florez (D-Shafter), was amended June 2 to "authorize a school district to make every effort to purchase poultry and meat products that have not been treated with non-therapeutic antibiotics."
Several groups opposed the bill, including the California Farm Bureau Federation and the California Poultry Federation.
