An Arkansas entrepenuer has developed a process that may help make poultry litter easier to sell off the farm. In the process, poultry litter is mixed with limestone and is ground. Then water is added, and it is mixed and finally heated. The resulting product is granular in form, dry and reportedly has very little odor. These granules can be spread with conventional fertilizer spreaders.
Keller owns Limestone Specialties, Inc., and limestone from his quarry will be used in this fertilizer manufacturing process. A $3 million, 46,000-square-foot plant in Lincoln, Ark., has been set up to commercialize the litter treatment process. If the venture is successful, Keller plans to procure up to 70,000 tons per year of poultry litter.
