Barcode tracking of chickens developed

Irish scientists at the UCD Bioresources Research Center work on the project.

A method of identifying individual chickens by putting miniature barcodes on their beaks and legs, and older hens by biometrical identification of their combs has been developed by a team of Irish scientists at the UCD Bioresources Research Center. The report says that the barcodes showed an accuracy rate as high as 97% and the biometrical identification accuracy was up to 84%.

Although real chicken body parts were used in these experiments, ways will have to be found in real-life situations to imprint the barcodes on live poultry while also ensuring their safety.
