Last week, Marfig Alimentos, a leading Brazilian meat processor, announced that it had come to an agreement with Doux-Frangosul to purchase its turkey production and processing operations.
The purchase is valued at R$ 65 million reales (US$33 million), which will be adjusted after due diligence is completed.
The operations include one processing plant (30,000 birds daily), a feed mill, a hatchery, four farms with a capacity of 1 million birds, plus 50,000 breeders and 300 contract growers.
According to Industria Avicola's 2009 statistics, Doux-Frangosul processes 6 million turkeys a year. Doux-Frangosul is the third largest turkey producer in Brazil, and the fourth largest chicken producer.
Marfrig, a major red meat processor, purchased several Brazilian and European poultry operations in the last two years, and is now the fifth largest poultry processor in Brazil.
According to the Brazil's Globo.com, Marfrig's operations in South America, North America and Europe have a daily processing capacity of: 21 thousand head of cattle, 4 thousand pigs and 1.7 billion chickens.
