FAO stanches locust plague in Tanzania

The organization used $1 million from its emergency funds to help.

A joint campaign of the FAO and the International Locust Control Organization for Central and Southern Africa successfully used biopesticides on a large scale to stanch a plague of locusts in Tanzania. The aerial survey and control operations will continue in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

The UN's Central Emergency Response Fund contributed nearly $2 million to the operation while the FAO used $1 million from its emergency funds for the purpose.

The Tanzania operation focused on Iku-Katavi National Park, the Lake Rukwa plains and the Malagarasi River Basin. To protect the wild animals, the FAO used the biopesticide Green Muscle, which is deadly only to locusts and grasshoppers and does not affect the environment.
