Taiwan: Regulations to separate corn for feed from corn for food

Taiwan’s Bureau of Food Safety has separated the managements of imported corn for feed from corn imported for human consumption.

Taiwan’s Bureau of Food Safety has separated the managements of imported corn for feed from corn imported for human consumption. Regulators will now only test imported feed-use corn for aflatoxins and not pesticide residues. Until recently, there was only one “commodity classification code” for importing corn. Roughly 95 percent of imported corn is destined for feed use in Taiwan’s livestock industry.  The change in testing regulations is already said to be contributing to increasing corn exports to Taiwan. Taiwan imported 2.9 million tons of U.S. corn (11.4 million bushels) during the first six months of 2008 compared with 2.6 million tons (102.3 million bushels) during the same period in 2007.
