Spanish pork exports increase

Spanish pork exports increase for the first half of 2008.

The increase in Spanish pork exports in the first half of 2008 was as much as 20 percent, mainly the result of a doubling in trade to the non-EU markets of Russia and Hong Kong and partly facilitated by increased domestic availability of pig meat.

Shipments to France, where product is used in further processing, were unchanged. Chilled pork accounted for slightly over half of total exports, the majority destined for other EU countries.

Slaughterings in January-May 2008 were up 2 percent compared with throughputs in the same period of 2007 and production increased by as much as 5 percent because of higher carcase weights.
