Lee Cockerell, retired executive vice president of operations for Walt Disney World Resort, addressed 285 students from 23 universities as the keynote speaker at the College Student Career Program, which was held in conjunction with the 2011 International Poultry Expo and sponsored by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.
During his talk, Cockerell stressed the importance of good leadership and the impact it can have on students’ careers. “Don’t underestimate the influence you have on people’s lives," he said. "A leader’s job is to do what needs to be done when it has to be done. Understand you must always bring a good environment to the job. Don’t let people feel invisible. Give the people you lead appreciation, recognition and encouragement.” According to Cockerell, a good leader aspires to be technically and technologically competent, organized, efficient and competent.
The College Student Career Program gives graduating students the opportunity to interview for jobs and internships with industry and allied firms. They also visit the exhibit floor to complement their studies by seeing the latest technology and newest innovations in today's poultry and egg production and processing operations.
