US pork production down 3% in April

U.S. pork production totaled 1.79 billion pounds in April, down 3% from April 2010 (1.85 billion pounds) and 13% from March 2011 numbers (2.05 billion pounds), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Hog slaughter totaled 8.63 million head, down 5% from 2010 numbers, but the average live weight was up four pounds from April 2010, at 277 pounds.

In the U.S., Iowa reported the highest slaughter numbers in April, at 2.36 million hogs. North Carolina recorded the second-highest numbers, at 876,700 hogs.
