The Scottish Agricultural College awarded a Personal Professorship in Veterinary Disease Investigation to its veterinary manager, Dr. Jill Thomson, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to veterinary pathology and pig medicine.
Dr. Thompson received the award at the university’s annual graduation ceremony in Glasgow on July 8.
She joined SAC in 1982, after gaining a Ph.D. at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. Her focus was on farm animal disease surveillance and veterinary laboratory diagnosis. From her Edinburgh base, she specialized in veterinary pathology and pig medicine, obtaining internationally recognized qualifications. Jill is an active member of the Pig Veterinary Society and was the Society's president in 2007.
Under her direction, SAC Veterinary Services developed a portfolio of eight pig diagnostic tests that serve as tools for disease diagnosis and health monitoring in breeding herds.
