Many German consumers today know almost nothing about the origins of the food they buy in a supermarket, comments the president of the Farmers' Association. People who live in towns do not usually visit pig farms. So the display of pigs is one way of bringing the farm to their town.

The road-show is designed to highlight that pork producers provide the right husbandry and housing for the animals in their care. The mobile house holding the pigs is a highly modern construction fully equipped with feeding and ventilation systems, but placed on a trailer so that it can be towed easily.

It has been devised and realized by Germany's ZDS central association for pig production together with the FNL federal agency for promoting sustainable agriculture. They are making it available for local groups around the country to borrow and bring into town centers.

A nationwide 'Insights' campaign at the same time is compiling of list of pig producers who are prepared to open their farms for visits by schoolchildren as well as by townspeople from the area.
