Weather and harvest updates

The USDA’s June 21 bulletin reports a large storm front lingered over the Central and Southern plains and into the Southeast.

For a week, thunderstorms brought heavy rains and fueled at least six tornadoes, including a deadly EF-3 in the Texas high plains.

Showers also extended into the Rockies and parts of the West. Much of the Midwest saw below-average precipitation and, coupled with higher-than-average temperatures throughout much of the country, led to poor topsoil conditions for crops in their reproductive stage.

  • The wheat harvest continues as crop maturity advances.
  • The winter wheat harvest is 94% complete, 1 point behind the five-year average. 38% of acres are in good to excellent condition, 8 points above last year.
  • 98% of spring wheat acres are emerged, 3 points above the five-year average. 51% are in good to excellent condition, 8 points behind last year. 
  • Barley is 7% headed, 4 points behind the five-year average. 50% of barley is in good to excellent condition, 1 point behind last year.
  • Oat acres are 58% headed, 10 points behind the 5-year average.
  • Corn development is highly variable within some fields.
  • 96% of corn is emerged, 2 points above the five-year average. Nationally, 55% of corn is in good-to-excellent condition, 15 points behind last year.

Here are the states with the highest good to excellent ratings, as well as the states with the highest poor to very poor ratings.

Good to excellent: CO, TX

Poor to very poor: IL, IN, MI, MO, PA, SD, TN, WI
