As shoppers head to the to get food for their Independence Day celebrations, they are apt to be paying less for boneless skinless chicken breast meat than they did one year ago. However, the price for leg quarters might be a little bit higher.

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) just released its annual marketbasket survey, which revealed a 9% year-over-year decrease in the price of chicken breasts. A pound of breast meat averages about $4.07, that survey revealed.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Livestock Analyst Shayle Shagam also noticed a year-over-year decrease in the price of breast meat, but his findings revealed even lower prices. In a USDA Radio news segment, Shagham said he has found that boneless skinless chicken breast was being featured at retail at $3.09 per pound, which he estimated was down about 63 cents a pound from the previous year.

However, Shagam said “some people like to throw those leg quarters on the grill,” and this week leg quarters have been selling at about 76 cents per pound, which is on the average about 3 cents per pound more than they sold for in 2022.
