Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has struck again in the U.S. state of South Dakota and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

Avian influenza in South Dakota

The latest commercial poultry flock in South Dakota to be affected by HPAI involved 29,700 commercial meat turkeys in Beadle County.

The presence of the virus was confirmed on October 31, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

So far in 2023, South Dakota has had nine commercial turkey flocks affected by HPAI and one commercial upland gamebird flock. Of those nine turkey flocks, three of them have been in Beadle County.

South Dakota had 61 commercial flocks affected by HPAI in 2022.

Avian influenza in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan had its second confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in commercial poultry of 2023.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the most recent case was confirmed on October 31 in the Rural Municipality of Laird.

CFIA has not yet disclosed the type of birds in the flock, or how many birds were involved.

This is the third HPAI infection in Laird during the 2022-23 outbreak, but the other two were confirmed more than a year ago – the first on September 9, 2022, and the second on September 19, 2022.

Saskatchewan’s only other case of HPAI in commercial poultry this year was confirmed on September 21 in the Rural Municipality of Maple Creek. Before that, HPAI had not appeared in the province since November 14, 2022.

In 2022, Saskatchewan had 16 commercial flocks affected by HPAI.
