Dutch pig breeding company Topigs and its associated AI company Varkens KI Nederland report an importation of 124 boars from Canada at the end of 2008 for use in artificial insemination in the Netherlands.

The top-rated SPF boars originated from a Topigs nucleus unit in Saskatchewan. Out of the total shipment, 94 animals are terminal boars from the Tempo line that will go after quarantine into an SPF-status station operated by Varkens KI Nederland to produce semen for the Dutch market. The others are type-A damline boars that will be transported to Spanish AI operator AIM Iberica, another member of the same group, for the production of Topigs sows in Spain.
