Daybreak Foods expanding Wisconsin operation

Daybreak Foods is expanding its operations in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, in a project that will not only add to its capacity, but will also accommodate a transition to cage-free egg production.

Daybreak Foods is expanding its operations in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, in a project that will not only add to its capacity, but will also accommodate a transition to cage-free egg production.

Daybreak Foods spokesman Rick Roedl recently met with the Lake Mills Town Board to discuss the company’s plans. Following the purchase of property adjacent to its current operations, Daybreak Foods will be tearing current buildings down on the new property and will be adding five new barns, measuring 120 feet by 80 feet.

With the planned project, Daybreak Foods will expand its capacity in Lake Mills to 2 million hens and also have an additional 700,000 pullets in a pullet barn, according to a report from the Lake Mills Leader. The company is in the process of obtaining permits to facilitate the expansion.

Roedl told members of the town board that he had wanted to meet with them about the company’s plans earlier, but that it took about a year to determine which particular laying systems would be used by the company.

The company also plans to plant trees around the property, as trees help with biosecurity because of their natural air filtration.

Daybreak Foods is the sixth largest egg producer in the United States and the ninth largest egg producer in the world. According to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, Daybreak Foods is a privately held company that specializes in both traditional eggs and liquid egg products. In 2016, the company had a flock of 13 million hens.
