Fans of plant-based meat can soon look forward to a new addition to the lineup.
Burger King is expanding its plant-based options with the Impossible Original Chick’n Sandwich. The sandwich – which comes with shredded lettuce and mayonnaise on a sesame seed bun – began testing August 22 at select restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is approximately $4.69 to $6.59 depending on location.
If the sandwich becomes a national menu item, it will join other Burger King plant-based items like the Impossible Whopper – launched in 2019 – and Impossible Nuggets – launched in 2021.
The chain has also clarified that the Impossible chicken patty is cooked in the same fryer as the regular chicken patties. After the release of the Impossible Whopper, Burger King received a lawsuit accusing the chain of misleading customers to think the Impossible burgers were cooked on a separate grill from the beef burgers. According to a judge, “Burger King promised a non-meat patty and delivered,” so the lawsuit was dismissed.
While some plant-based restaurant chain items have been successful, not all have been so lucky. McDonald’s recently discontinued its McPlant after poor performance results.
Various restaurant chains – along with Burger King – have partnered with plant-based meat company, Impossible Foods, to create unique plant-based menu items including Applebee’s Grill and Bar, Giordano’s, Hard Rock Café, The Cheesecake Factory and White Castle.
