Unlike the Oscars, which are held each year, the Latin American Poultry Hall of Fame awards are given every two years during a ceremony held during the Latin American Poultry Congress.
This year, the Latin American Poultry Congress — renamed OVUM 2019 — will be held in Lima, Peru, October 9-11. Once again, we will present this award, which some people affectionately call the Chicken Oscars.
The Hall of Fame awards were instituted in 1987 to identify and reward those who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of the Latin American poultry industry. WATT Global Media and the magazine Industria Avícola are in charge of the Hall of Fame, with the support of the Latin American Poultry Association (ALA).
Throughout its 32-year history, 69 producers, entrepreneurs, professionals, university professors, and researchers have been recognized because of their impressive careers. I have had the honor of delivering 12 of these 69 awards.
As of today, there are only two countries that do not have inductees: Honduras and Paraguay. There are 11 from Brazil, 10 from Mexico, seven from Argentina, five from Venezuela, four each from Peru and Panama, three each from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia,Cuba, Ecuador and El Salvador; two each from Costa Rica, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay; and one each from Nicaragua and the United States.
The selection of new members to the Hall of Fame is made based on the criteria established since 1987. To do this, a jury is selected consisting of ten professionals from the poultry industry from several countries. They read and evaluate the CVs received to cast their vote.
This jury is anonymous. They don't even know each other. Every two years, new people are chosen from different areas, such as academia, live production, incubation, research, and genetics. After studying the CVs, they send their votes and it is determined, from among the nominees, who are awarded the Chicken Oscar.
