So far this year, exports of chicken meat by Brazil are running 5.6% ahead of last year in volume terms.

For the January-November period, shipments amounted to more than 4.68 million metric tons (mmt), according to the nation’s export body, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association, ABPA.

At a little under US$9.0 billion, the revenue from this trade — which includes all fresh and processed chicken meat products — is hardly changed from the corresponding period of 2022.

For the month of November, the volume of product exported by Brazil was marginally higher than that traded in the same month of last year, but the revenue was down by more than 13% year-on-year.

ABPA forecasts it is still on course to deliver shipments of more than 5mt for 2023.

The leading destination for Brazilian chicken so far this year has been China. Over the January-November period, Brazil increased the export volume by 28% year-on-year to over 632,000 metric tons (mt). Strong demand from this buyer was due to a contraction in China’s domestic production, according to ABPA Markets Director Luis Rua.

Other countries significantly increasing uptake of chicken from Brazil compared with last year were South Africa (309,000mt; +21%), and Mexico (173,000mt; +28%)

Earlier this month, ABPA president Ricardo Santin was elected president of the international Poultry Council, the body representing the global poultry industry.
