Smithfield to lay off 140 employees

Murphy-Brown, a Smithfield company, is closing its sow operations and laying-off 140 workers from the Dalhart, Texas, location as of August 17. The action is part of its cutting-back initiatives, according to a news report.

Most of the employees, including managers, technicians and security guards, work directly with the hogs.

The company will continue to operate the nurseries and finishers at these locations.
