The steady drop in backyard hog production in the Philippines, caused by diseases and rising production costs, could cause a spike in pork prices, according to a news report.
The National Federation of Hog Farmers Inc. said the farm gate price of live hogs for backyard growers has risen to around US$1.70-$1.74 (P82-840) per kilo, while the farm gate price for commercial growers is slightly higher at US$1.85-$1.89 (P89-P91) per kilo. Pork prices are pushing $3.52 (P170) per kilo at the retail level.
