Subway quietly removed one of its chicken menu options and fans are wondering why.
CBC news study
One theory on the removal points to a 2017 study done by CBC news Marketplace which alleged that Subway's chicken was only 50% real chicken. In response to the public backlash, a Subway representative told TIME, “Our chicken is 100% white meat with seasonings, marinated and delivered to our stores as a finished, cooked product. We have advised [Marketplace] of our strong objections… [and] we are insisting on a full retraction.”
Subway also filed a $210 million defamation suit against CBC news which was initially dismissed by an Ontario judge. However, as of 2021, an Ontario Court of Appeal has allowed the lawsuit to proceed.
Reddit searches for the chicken
Fans of Subway slowly noticed that the oven roasted menu item was no longer offered at some locations in 2021, so they created the thread “Did subway remove oven roasted chicken breast?” to determine if this was across all franchises, according to Mashed.
The fast-food chain has not made an official statement about the removal and has not yet responded to a WATTPoultry.com request for comment.

President of Subway North America, Trevor Haynes said Subway is hitting “record sales” and that “the results from the Subway Series launch and the positive reaction from guests and franchisees demonstrates that our transformation strategy is working.”
The Subway Series is a new menu divided into four categories – Cheesesteaks, Italianos, Chicken and Clubs – with three sandwiches each, according to CNN.
“We are hearing from guests that they like the flexibility of ordering by name and number and are enjoying the new Subway Series sandwiches, which is reflected in the increased traffic and sales across my restaurants,” said Donna Curry, Subway franchisee.
