Sofina Foods Inc. is recalling Compliments brand chicken strips from the marketplace to avoid possible Salmonella illnesses, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported.
The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of human illness and has identified this product as a source of illness. The outbreak investigation is ongoing and may identify other sources. Consumers should not consume this recalled product: Compliments chicken strips – breaded chicken cutlettes, uncooked. The product came in 907 gram packages and contained the UPC symbol: 0 57742 33687 0.
The recalled product was sold nationally until May 1, 2019 but some consumers may still have it in their freezer. CFIA is verifying that the product has been removed from the marketplace.
CFIA is urging people who have purchased the recalled products to dispose of them or return them to the place where they were purchased.
Earlier recalls of Sofina Foods products
The latest recall is one of many that involved Sofina Foods products that may be contaminated with Salmonella. In March, the company recalled Janes brand Pub Style Chicken Nuggets – Breaded Chicken Cutlettes, which were distributed in 800 gram packages and carrying a best before date of December 15, 2019. That recall followed two earlier ones – one in January and the other in February – that involved breaded chicken cutlettes carrying the Compliments and Crisp & Delicious brand names, respectively.
The company also had products recalled on November 2 and October 26, 2018; and two recalls issued on October 17, 2017, all of which were related to concerns with Salmonella contamination.
Headquartered in Markham, Ontario, Sofina Foods has several brands of chicken and turkey products. Other brands include Lilydale and Cuddy Food Products. Sofina acquired Lilydale, then a producer-owned poultry processing cooperative in Edmonton, Alberta, in 2010 for a price of CA$130 million.
