KFC will trial two new variations on its traditional chicken sandwich – the Ultimate BBQ KFC Chicken Sandwich and the Spicy Slaw Chicken Sandwich – in Tampa, Florida.
“The KFC Chicken Sandwich is the best in the business, and we’re excited to expand our chicken sandwich lineup with two new premium options,” KFC U.S. CMO Nick Chavez said in a statement.
“This limited test of the Ultimate BBQ and Spicy Slaw chicken sandwiches is part of a continued commitment to giving customers more of what they want. We know our customers are looking for new, distinctive sandwich options and the Ultimate BBQ and Spicy Slaw offer flavor variety that builds on classic KFC ingredients. We think fans of spicy food will particularly love the kick of heat in our Spicy Slaw Sandwich.”
The Ultimate BBQ KFC Chicken Sandwich features an extra crispy white meat chicken filet topped with Honey BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions, hickory-smoked bacon, melted cheese and pickles served on a brioche bun. It will retail for $6.99.
The Spicy Slaw Chicken also featured an extra crispy chicken filet alongside coleslaw, spicy mayo and pickles served on a brioche bun and retails for $5.99.
“The chicken sandwich has experienced huge growth since its launch and we’re excited about its first extension,” Chavez said. “Our goal is to accelerate the innovation pipeline to achieve more relevance among younger consumers.”
The quick service restaurant chain also recently announced the launch of Kentucky Fried Chicken Wraps. KFC brought back the two varieties of wraps after more than 42,000 tweets from consumers.
New variations on the fried chicken sandwich is one of the top restaurant trends of the year, the National Restaurant Association announced. This includes three new chicken sandwiches from Burger King: the Mexican Original Chicken Sandwich, Italian Original Chicken Sandwich and American Original Chicken Sandwich.
