Artificial intelligence and imaging could accurately identify the sex of broiler chicks, reducing high labor costs and improving efficiency in the hatchery.

“Previously, workers would manually check the vent of the chick,” explained Bowen Cai, research scientist and managing director, Shanghai Xiashu Intelligent Company. “It is very hard for companies to hire and recruit people with those special skills.”

At the 2023 Poultry Tech Summit, Cai will share how this technology could help solve the problem of difficult recruitment, high labor cost, poor efficiency and low accuracy in the chick sex identification process.

The Poultry Tech Summit, scheduled for November 6-8 at the Hilton Atlanta Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, focuses on the transition of innovative technologies into commercial applications to advance the poultry industry.

Registration for this event is now open. Early bird savings are available.

Non-invasive broiler sex detection

Industrial cameras capture images of the vents of the chicks, using algorithms to non-invasively identify the chick’s sex with an accuracy rate of 99%. Once the sex is determined, the machine automatically sorts and separates male and female chicks.

The platform, which can sex 1,000-1,200 chicks per hour, is designed for operator ease of use.
