Proposed EFSA regulations threaten EU broiler producers

If accepted as proposed, these new regulations would switch the EU from a net exporter to an importer of chicken meat.

“Europe doesn’t like agriculture anymore,” said Jan Henriksen, CEO, Aviagen broiler breeder group, at the International Poultry Council's second semester meeting in Chicago, Illinois, on October 4, 2023. He said this in reference to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) proposal to limit broiler growth rates to no more than 50 grams per day and reduce stocking density to no more that 30 kilograms per square meter of floor space. The industry currently achieves a gain per day of 65-68 grams per day and stocking density doesn’t exceed 40 kilograms per square meter.
