I didn’t previously know that this was Teachers and Nurses Appreciation Week, but thanks to chicken chain restaurant Zaxby’s, now I do.

And in observance of this week, Zaxby’s is doing something special to let people who hold those difficult and often underappreciated jobs that their efforts don’t go by unnoticed. According to a press release from the company, teachers and nurses were offered to take advantage of the "Buy One, Get One" Boneless Wings Meal offer, valid all day on May 2.

The meal features five, tender, tasty boneless wings tossed in one of eight signature sauces ranging from Tongue Torch to Wimpy and is served with Texas Toast, crinkle fries and Ranch sauce.

"Teachers and nurses are the unsung heroes of our society. We're serving up an extra order of our delicious wings as a way to show our gratitude," said Patrick Schwing, Zaxby's chief marketing and strategy officer. "This is just a small gesture, but we hope it shows our appreciation for their selfless dedication to helping others."

A small gesture, yes, but not only does Zaxby’s have some of the best chicken around, but it also set a great example that we could all follow.

By now, most of my teachers are retired, and quite a few of them are no longer living. But within the past week, while attending activities involving my youngest child, i came across two of them who are still shaping minds. One is still at the same school, while the other works at another school and we crossed paths at a competition involving multiple schools.

I still address them both the same way, even though both have asked me to simply use their first names. I just can’t bring myself to do that.

As far as nurses go, I can name several who have been so good to me and family members, and there are so many others who have offered care for one particular clinic or hospital visit that I may have never known their names, but I was still grateful for the work they did.

It may sound cliché, but I think every week should be Teachers and Nurses Appreciation Week.

Thanks, Zaxby’s, for showing your appreciation.
